Tech News

Apple unveiled a new iPhone SE on Tuesday at its first event of 2022. The new iPhone SE for 2022 has a similar body to the iPhone SE from 2020, but it has a new processor, 5G capabilities, and a higher price tag of $429 (£419, AU$719).

The new iPhone SE has the same body as the 2020 model, but it’s power by the same A15 Bionic technology as the iPhone 13. The A15 chip provides better processing rates; Apple claims that the new SE has a CPU that is 1.8x faster and a GPU that is 2.2x faster than the iPhone 8. While not every component of the new phone will make use of all of that capability. Such performance means that future versions of iOS will be support for years to come.

The iPhone SE includes a single 12-megapixel camera on the back and a 7-megapixel camera on the front. The A15 chip also delivers a slew of new features to the cameras, including Smart HDR 4, Photographic Styles, and Deep Fusion, among others.

Despite the addition of 5G functionality, which can drain a phone’s battery quickly. Apple claims that the new SE has a longer battery life than the 2020 model. Some of these enhancements could be attribute to the A15 processor and iOS 15. But I’m interest to see if Apple was able to pack in a larger battery as well.

However, despite all of the internal changes, a lot of things remain the same. The iPhone SE includes a home button with Touch ID but no Face ID. And the 4.7-inch LCD display is the same as the 2020 iPhone SE and the iPhone 8, both of which were release in 2017. The phone’s back is still made of glass, but Apple claim during the event that the “toughest glass on a smartphone” However, unlike the iPhone 12 and 13. The SE doesn’t appear to have a ceramic barrier over the display.

The iPhone SE will be available starting March 18 in three colors. Midnight (black), starlight (white), and Product Red, with preorders starting on Friday, March 11.

The original iPhone SE cost $399 when it was release in 2016. It was made up of an iPhone 5S’s body with an iPhone 6’s internals. The SE was an unexpected hit for Apple, appealing to those looking for a compact, inexpensive iPhone.

Apple redesigned the iPhone SE in 2020, giving it an iPhone 8 chassis and the A13 chip from the iPhone 11. The phone demonstrated how much of an iPhone’s capability is derive only from its processor. The 2020 iPhone SE the only iPhone Apple sold that had the basic iPhone design. A broad forehead, chin, and home button, till today.
